A Dead man’s guide to the blind

A short story of a traveller in the desert

short-story

I see you walking on the sands, alone, with a glint in your eyes.

The storm is rowdier than you are used to, but you propel yourself the same.

You do not have much water left, but you walk ahead, for you wish to go somewhere far.

Your memories of friends and family give you protection and warmth on these chilly nights.

You do not yet know how far you have to go, but you walk alone, with a glint in your eyes.

In your path, you notice a woman suffering, dying of thirst, so you give her the water you have left.

Her grief overwhelms you and fills your eyes with tears, but you know what you have to do.

You carry her on your shoulders and propel yourself forward, for you wish to go somewhere far.

Your throat is dry, the memories unreachable, your vision blurry, yet you walk forward for you are someone who has to help.

As days go by, you lose your sight and are unable to smell, but you walk ahead, for you wish to go somewhere far.

Then one day, the girl tells you that you have reached her destination and walks away with words of gratitude, and you force a smile on your face, unable to see the girl.

Your whole body hurts, the pain is unbearable, and as you lie on the sand and proclaim, 'Water,' You hear someone coming towards you, then you collapse.

You open your eyes with great effort and hope to see them in front. But you can't recognize them, you do not know if you dreamed them up.

You find yourself in surprise, for there is food and water right in the middle of this desert, but this person is nowhere to be seen.

You do not know if they were real or something you dreamed up, but the food satiates your appetite, and the water gives you energy.

So, you get yourself up, start walking on the sand, alone, with a glint in your eyes
